Great Smoky Mountains Geocaching Club: Adopt a Highway Project

More information about this project will be available as the cleanup date approaches.

TDOT Adopt a Highway Page

If you wish to participate in a cleanup, please be aware of the following:

-Everybody must sign a release form and watch a safety video before the cleanup. Anybody who has not turned in a form and watched the video will not be allowed to participate.

-Parents of anybody under the age of 18 must sign an additional release form. Childern under the age of 12 will not be allowed to participate, even with parental consent.

-Be aware that pickups take place next to a busy highway, and can be potentially dangerous. Everybody will be required to wear a safety vest.

-We are required to pick up our section 4 times a year. Cleanup may only take place on the dates listed as club events. These will be listed several months in advance and will usually be held on the weekends.

-Everybody who plans to participate must post a Will Attend note on the event page, so we can be sure that we have everybody's paperwork and can get an accurate guess as to how many people will show up. If you aren't sure whether you'll be able to make it, post a note and say so. Unfortunately, you can't just "show up", since we may not have enough safety vests for everybody, and if anybody does not have a release form turned in, our group could get in serious trouble and not be allowed to pick up again.

-TDOT will handle disposal of all trash. We are not supposed to handle certain items, such as car batteries, needles, or personal hygiene products. Simply make a note of their location and move on. We will go over these precautions in a quick safety meeting before each cleanup.

The form can be found here. Contact me (DavidMac) and I'll give you the address to mail it to. If you're under 18, you will also need to have your parents/guardians sign an additional consent form.
